Poetry from Illinois Times
Illinois Times is a weekly published in Springfield, IL, with a circulation that compasses central Illinois. It's an excellent paper (to us Democrats; Springfield's daily paper is pretty conservative). Though I've published several books in verse, I'd never thought of myself as a poet, and so was surprised when the IT editor asked me to provide them with a poem a week. I decided to give it a try. My first poem (Jan 6 '05) tells about taking the job. It's an assignment I've thoroughly enjoyed. No pay passes hands, but I have the freedom to write whatever I want, in any way I want. And unlike the long process of publishing a book, a local topic can show up in next week's issue.
What began as a single booklet of published poems has grown to an eighteen-year collection. And... I'm not done yet!
You can see my poem-a-week every week on Illinois Times' website.
